Fishing names in Scarborough's Old Town - Cammish Jenkinson and Sheader
A look at the electoral register in 1905-06 reveals quite a lot. If you look at certain streets within the old town then lots of the houses were taken by the fishing and seafaring families. A look at Quay Street for instance reveals seven houses occupied by Sheaders - and each of these houses had maybe whole families in with 7 or 8 children sleeping tip to toe in one bed. The names Cammish,Crawford, Sheader,Appleby, Normandale,Bayes, Dalton and Messenger come up time and time again. The most common name appears to be Cammish but there are lots of Jenkinsons. Some of these addresses have no fishing links but many of them do. The fishing families lived within the Old Town and did not really mix with anyone else. But even within the Old Town there were hotspots such as Sandside, Quay Street and all the little streets nearby by such as Tithill, Princess Lane, Salmon Steps, Castlegate, and Potter Lane. The fishing community really was very tightly knit. Areas considered as part of the Old Town do not feature so much with the fishing names such as Eastborough and St Sepulchre Street.
Those names with obvious links to the sea and fishing appear with an asterisk.
