On September 23rd,1779 a gallant sea fight between the squadrons of Captain Richard Pearson, and the noted Paul Jones, took place off Scarborough: which although it ended in the capture of the former, prevented the latter from commiting his depredations on the Yorkshire coast. Paul Jones had intended to land but was probably deterred by the firing of a morning and evening gun.
In the naval engagement Captain Pearson commanded the following:
- The Serapis, 44 guns, Captained by Pearson
- Countess of Scarborough, 20 guns, Captain Percy
Paul Jones squadron comprised of the following:
- La Bonhomme Richard, 40 guns, Captain Paul Jones
- The Alliance, 40 guns
- The Pallas,32 guns
- an armed Brig
The battle lasted nearly three hours with the muzzles of ght guns almost touching those of the opposing ships. The Serapis was almost set on fire 12 times by combustible material thrown from the Bonhomme Richard.
Captain Pearson was afterwards knighted for his bravery, and the freedom of the Borough of Scarborough was presented to him and his gallant colleague - Captain Percy.
Each side sustained the following losses:
- Captain Pearsons squadron took 49 killed and 68 wounded
- The Bonhomme Richard lost 300 men killed and injured. Most of the wounded died when the ship sank the next day
