Article by John rushton on scarboroughs earliest residents
The borough of Scarborough was formed in two stages by
Norman lords during the 12th century.A Norman baron,
William of Aumale .lord of Holderness, built a castle
on Crown land within the Manor of Falsgrave, of which
he was custodian. King Henry II took the castle from
him ,compensating him with the manor of Driffield.
Either William or King Henry created the old borough
of Scarborough on the high ground west of the castle.
The new borough was added west of the old borough.
A variety of early documents mention people who
settled in the borough before 1200. We can think of
them as the first Scarborians.
Some had Scandinavian names like Halfdane and Ketell.
A few came from older boroughs and ports. More were
free men from manors in the local countryside, Ruston,
Thurstanby, and Filing. Some are known from their
occupations, millers, cooks and churchmen. The
vintners- wine merchants will certainly have had ships
to take out wool and bring wine from Gascony .Other
men are known as sons of their fathers. Here are the
earliest men of Scarborough, free men who could make
and witness documents, and who had a market and some
measure of local government in their borough.
