Scarborough tunnels

Don Pickard remembers his father telling him about various tunnels in Scarborough.

ST MARYS WALK: Don Pickards father remembered a tunnel which was hidden beneath the well. This went right down to the the harbour. It was used as a smugglers route. A door three quarters the way down the well led straight to the castle. This had been bocked up.

ROYAL ALBERT DRIVE: Here there is apparently big metal door which leads to a tunnel which was intended to go right to the toll house near the harbour. But when the Marine Drive was built this became unneeded. During World War Two this was apparently used to store thousands of shells.

Don's father also mentioned the Marine Drive. This was built with wooden foundations. Yorkshire Water took out these wooden foundations and it could be this that caused the Marine Drive to sink along with all its sea defences.

THE WAR: Don's father remembered how scrap metal was collected. The railings from Dean Road Cemetery were taken down. He reckoned that they were stored and never used in Corporation Yard.

GALALAND: This was an underground adventure park in Valley road. This streched from where the underground car park is now right up to Valley Bridge. It contained swimming pools, amusements and sunken gardens.

BARROWCLIFFE: Don was one of the first children ever to go to Barrowcliffe school. He lived in briercliffe and remembers the families who lived there - Richardsons, the Cooks, and the Grants.
