A whaling adventure off Scarborough

On the 25th of November, 1785, two large sized whales (as were supposed, the male and female) being seen from this place, were pursued, and one of them was struck by a seaman. Attacking the fish, he jumped upon its back. Whilst there the novelty of his position confused him, and he did not follow the directions given to him, and so the harpoon did not penetrate to a sufficient depth, and the fish, worth many hundreds of pounds, made its escape.

"Baker quotes a coprporation lease of 1630, granted to Samuel Hodgson and Peter Rosdell for what was virtually a monopoly for converting blubber, liver, and other refuse into "trayn oyle"; and adds that later a Mr Sollet had the monopoly as well as the benefit of a common lane adjoining the fish grounds "to sell his caskes of blubber and oyle on." He states that later an oil house was built by Stephen Wharton for the purpose of boiling blubber brought by his ships from the whale fishery, about where St. Nicholas House (now the Town Hall) stands; and that there was another blubber boiling house in the Castle Holmes
