?Child dies after street game

There was an exciting scene at Mill Lane on Friday night, when an alleged deserter kept the police at bay from about 8:45 to 11 o'clock by getting on the roof of the house. There were many spectators, and the story was briefly related in the Borough Police Court on Friday Saturday, before Mr WW Gibson, when Arthur Lewis Mickley (36),Royal Air Force, Mill Lane, was charged with deserting from the Royal Air Force stationed at Winchester on the 10th March.

He pleaded guilty.

... When the police went upstairs, Mickley picked up an iron bar and got out of the window on to the scullery roof. From there he climbed to the roof of the house. The police got further assistance also ladders. When charged with the offence the accused replied "I know nothing about it" and the constable added that he was in an absolute frenzy.

He could not sleep at night especially in the police cell. He also stated that he had been depressed and had been in this state for a number of days. When he took fit he lost control over hismelf.
