?Policemen fight fire in pajamas
In the May 8th (1920) edition of the Scarborough Mercury a big fire was reported in Filey at the Crescent Hotel. This was soon fought by a mixture of people at hand. It was felt that the fire would soon be put out so the fire brigade was not called.
The fire was discovered by a Miss Greenwood and soon the fire was being tackled. Two policemen had quickly arrived at the scene on bikes in their Pajamas -PC Bennett and Seargeant Taylor. Visitors in night attire with buckets an saucepans and other utensils passed water from hand to hand. Seargeant Taylor organised the firefight which had broken out at the hotplate.
